Ocular and Orbital defects: Surgical and Prosthetic Rehabilitation (Part-2)
Orbital prosthesis is considered as the most challenging maxillofacial prosthesis. Most of the orbital defects are associated with oral defects making rehabilitation procedure more complicated for such composite defects. An orbital prosthesis is a suitable alternate option to surgical reconstruction for cosmetic as well as psychological rehabilitation of the patient. Orbital prosthesis demands aesthetics, durability, cost effectiveness and most significantly adequate retention. Even though anatomical retention with the help of undercuts is preferred, adhesives and implants help to improve the treatment outcome. Several techniques can be used for fabrication of orbital prosthesis. Shade matching is considered as very important step to restore the esthetics. Appropriate case selection and apposite technique for fabrication of orbital prosthesis will improve the quality of life tremendously.
